A little bit of everything, email, free phone call app, free training apps etc. Being a small class during the summer months allows us to cover a wide spectrum of things related to the iPhone and iPad.

BookBub (landers.bookbub.com) and ENT (EreaderNewsToday.com) have daily offers of Free or very low cost ebooks. Not Bestsellers, but some very good reads. You can download them onto your iPhone or iPad, though you may need an Amazon account to do it through.

translate.google.com - can get it as an app too (google translate)

translate an entire website from approximately 81 foreign languages into English or vice versa. With the app, you can type in what you want translated, speak it into the microphone OR handwrite it, and the app will not only display the correct phrase, but click on the speaker icon next to it and you'll hear how to say it in the language you're wanting!

MagicJack

Use this app on your iPad to make FREE calls to Canada and the US (directly to your friend's landline). This will require WiFi access. You may want to email the person to alert them that you'll be calling because it shows up on caller ID as coming from Florida.

WONDERFUL online classes highly recommended by Sandy and Kay:

David A Cox's PCclassesonline.com

Great classes on iPad, iPhone, PCs and Macs

Just for examples:

One class teaches you how to get rid of duplicate contacts.

Another class is on Battery Life.

Another about iCloud support?

(Note: When you first sign up, you must wait for a confirmation email that will give you this month's password in order to access the website.)

Contacts: Just a note: as soon as you change something in one contact on one iDevice, it will sync IMMEDIATELY in your other iProducts. So immediately put the other iProduct in Airplane mode if you don't want it to sync.

If you don't care for the 3D effect in the ios7 (wallpaper moves slightly when iPhone is moved), stop it by going to:

Settings

General (if you don't see General, swipe to find it)

Accessibility

Reduce Motion - turn it on (will show green)

To send a Photo in email on iPhone or iPad:

Open Photos

Select a photo by touching it and it will become full screen

Hit the Share button (box with upward arrow) [on iPhone the photo will have a circle with a checkmark in it. You can swipe to select more photos (max 5 for email). When you've chosen the ones you want, click NEXT]

select MAIL

Fill in the To: and Subject: lines by touching each and the keyboard will appear. When done typing, hit keyboard symbol on lower right.

Click send

on the iPhone, it will ask you to choose the message size. Choose MEDIUM

MAIL (the blue square with white envelope) App:

To set up your iPad or iPhone to receive email: You must know your email provider (ie AOL, Google[gmail]cr8zy, yahoo, etc), your email address and password. To set up new email account:

Settings

Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Add Account

Choose type of account (provider)

enter Name, email address, password & description

Next (mail will begin verifying)

If all is correct, blue checkmarks will appear next to each entry, then the next screen will show up

At this point, Turn on Mail & Contacts. Calendars and notes are your decision.

Save

You new email account will be added

Again, it is recommended you have a gmail address (that will also serve as the login for other google based sites you may want to access).

To create one:

Go to gmail.com

(note: when you go into Safari, there may be a website address already in the address bar. Simply touch it. When it highlights all blue, you can just start typing the address you want) Then press GO.

Below the blue sign-in rectangle are the words Create A New Account

Tap that and it will take you to accounts.google.com

Follow the prompts to create a google account which will serve as your gmail login. (Remember to write down your user name & 8 character password!) You'll also have to enter a birth month, day & year, but you can make one up - just remember to write that down also. To prove you're not a robot randomly creating gmail addresses, you have to type the numbers displayed into the blank space below them. Verify your location is United States, check the box agreeing to the Terms of Service, then tap Next step

If every was put in correctly, you'll come to a Welcome! page confirming your new gmail user name.

Leave this page and go back to Settings to set up your iPad or iPhone to receive this new email address. (see steps 1 through 10 above).

Within Mail, mailboxes are more like file folders, so you can organize your saved emails. When you go into Mail, you can choose to look at your emails via each individual email address you have OR you can select All Inboxes.

To read about "Folders (Mailboxes) in Mail and arranging your emails", refer to the Sunday, December 14, 2013 post on the PALM CREEK IPAD USERS GROUP blog (pcipadusersgroup.blogspot.com). Type the word Mail in the search bar (upper left where the magnifying glass is).

We worked on moving photos from iphone/ipad to a PC today.

First, on your PC (computer):

Start button (lower left in Windows 7)

Select Computer

C drive

Users (folder)

Your name (folder)

My Pictures (folder)

Create a new folder and Label it: iPad Photos

Create a separate new folder and Label it: iPhone Photos

YES, you need 2 different folders as you want to keep separate which photos come from each iUnit. Because of syncing between iProducts and photo streaming (which is ONLY between iProducts) knowing from which product a certain photo originated gets confusing.

NOTE: Camera Roll is the Master File on the iPad. If you delete a photo in there, it is gone from ALL albums.

Now, connect your iPad (or iPhone) to the computer with the USB charger cord that came with your iProduct.

To access the photos from the iPad that is connected to the computer, go to:

Computer

Your iPad should now show up where the other drives in your computer appear. Be PATIENT, it may not show up immediately. If iTunes opens, close it - we're not moving photos through that today. Click on your iPad when it appears.

NOTE: Your computer may ask "Do you want to allow this computer to access info on "XNAME's iPad?"' Effectively say yes, by clicking CONTINUE.

And, Your iPad will ask "Trust this computer?" Click TRUST.

After you've clicked on 'your iPad', INTERNAL STORAGE will appear. Click on that.

DCIM will show next. Keep clicking on that until photos appear.

From here, you can move all the photos currently on your iPad into the computer:

Highlight the 1st photo

Scroll to the bottom

Hold the SHIFT key down as you click on the last photo.*

All photos will turn blue

R click in the blue, and choose COPY

Now, on the left of the computer's screen, click on PICTURES

Find the folder you created earlier named iPad Photos

R click on that folder, then click PASTE

All the photos will copy into that folder!

*Note: If you prefer to pick and choose which photos to copy, hold down the CTRL key as you click click click the individual, noncontiguous pictures. They will turn blue as you choose them.

Now that the photos are in your computer, you can burn them to a disk, USB, or backup on an external hard drive. ONLY after you're sure you have your photos SAVED, you can delete them from your iPad to free up space.

It is highly recommended you back up your ENTIRE computer the 1st of every month. This is easy using an external hard drive. There are convenient sized portable hard drives even up to 1TB(terra byte)! The initial full backup will take quite a bit of time, but future ones will only backup files that have changed. Join and attend Palm Creek's wonderful Computer Club for more information.

On iPad and iPhone, photos can be transferred even easier than the procedure outlined above by using an App made especially for this. Two that Sandy recommends are:

WIFI transfer $2.99 in the App Store (but you can wait for it to come around on Apps Gone Free).

Video2photo $0.99 in the App Store.

With the vast range of user levels, if we plan to continue next year we will need volunteers who will help with demos, or just sharing of ideas, experiences and apps. In this way, we may be able create a specific agenda for each week we hold a session. There should be more specific sessions for the various user levels, but that is impossible without more resources.

Just to show one of the many fun things an iPad can do, Sandy demonstrated how anyone with Dish Cable can look for programs and/or record a show even if away from home by using the Dish anywhere app.

She then introduced the founder of the iPad Users Group, Brent Shirley, who received a round of applause!

Sandy then shared with new attendees how to make a shortcut to the invaluable Palm Creek iPad Users' Blog:

Open the Safari web browser, tap in the address bar to allow you to type in the new address - www.pcipadusersgroup.blogspot.com. Then press GO on the keyboard.

Once you are on the iPad Users' Group site, hit the box with the arrow pointing straight up (in the upper left corner). From the gray-outlined symbols that appear, choose Add to Home Screen. At this point, change the name since you'll only be able to read a short bit on your home screen and you want the title to be easy to recognize. (You will NOT be able to edit the title later). Tap on the current bold-texted title (Palm Creek iPad Users Group), tap the X in a circle, then type in a better title (ie iPad Users).

Then click Add. You will now be able to easily go to the PC iPad Users' Group blog directly from your home screen by tapping that shortcut icon.

(Quick note - if you had chosen Add to Reading List instead of Add to Home Screen, you would find this webpage in the future by accessing the web via Safari, choosing the bookmark icon in the upper right (next to the cloud), then clicking on the eyeglasses symbol to see your saved reading lists.)

Organizing Apps/Icons into Folders:

Press and hold one shortcut (icon) until it Wiggles. While icons are jiggling, hold one with your finger and drag it into a similar icon (you may have to practice until the one you are dragging gets a bit smaller OVER the one you're dragging it into).

When you've moved 2 icons together, a folder will be formed, and the iPad will automatically suggest a name for it. You can rename it by hitting the X to the right of the title, and typing in what you prefer, then hit DONE on the keyboard.

Touch the home button to stop the jiggling.

(If an icon/shortcut is on the second or third page, and you want it on the first page: move the jiggling icon across the screen & hold it at the edge of the page (so about 1/2 of the icon shows). The page(s) will move. Release icon on the new page you desire.)

In iOS7, you can have greater than 12 icons in 1 folder. Once you've clicked on the folder, look at the little dots at bottom to see how many pages there are. The brighter dot indicates which page you are on. Simply swipe left or right to get to the other page(s).

Note, if your fingers are cold, the touching and/or swiping won't work (you may need to use a stylus - one of the better ones is Targus, approx $15 at Office Max).

Reminder, while you are able to delete apps to free up space on your iPad or iPhone, then get them back later from the iCloud, DON'T delete apps you use regularly because you will lose the data you've entered into them.

Go onto the iTunes App store, scroll to the bottom. Choose Apps made by Apple. If you have the new iPad Air or iPhone 5, these will be free. For an older iPad, these apps will cost anywhere from FREE to $9.99. NOTE: If you have an older iPad, but get the new iPhone 5 and download the Apps Made by Apple onto the new iPhone for FREE, they will then be in the iCloud and you can access them on your older iPad at no cost!

Usually when we create our iTunes account, we enter a credit card to be saved, making any future purchases from the iTunes Store as easy as just entering our password. But what if someone gives us an apple giftcard, and we want to use that instead of our credit card? We must disable that saved credit card via:
go to settings. Scroll down (on the left) to iTunes & App Store. Touch your Apple ID. From the box that pops open, touch view Apple ID. You will have to enter your password to sign in to iTunes Store. After you have signed in, scroll down to Payment Information. You will see your current payment type highlighted in blue text (ie Visa, Mastercard, Amex).

To disable your current card, select NONE, then Done at the upper right.

Then to use your gift card: Go to the App Store on the Featured page (star) scroll to the bottom and click on Redeem. You can take a photo of your gift card with the iPad's camera, or enter the code manually.

$$ saving suggestion: Buy an iTunes gift card at Fry's Grocery Store here in Casa Grande to get a minimum of 2x fuel points instantly and use the gift card instead of your Credit Card at the iTunes Store. :-)

FREE Apps you should download:

Find iPad (Find my iPhone) If your iPad or iPhone is misplaced or stolen, you'll be able to locate it on a map. You can have it play a sound too (good for those forgetful days and you KNOW it's somewhere in the house).

Find my Friends (once your friends accept your invite, you can see the exact spot on a map where your friends are) Creepy? This is great when you are travelling, especially if you are alone.

iBooks (will hold PDFs besides just books. You can go to the websites of your appliances and download their manuals into iBooks. You can keep the PDF file of Fry's Grocery's weekly flyer in iBooks. You can save Palm Creek's Newletters there, etc. Sandy will go into more detail next week, but you can always go to the eHow section in Google to learn how to do these things if you just can't wait.

Have too many apps open, and your iPad slowing down? Double click the Home button. All open apps appear (you may have to swipe left or right to see them all). This is the MultiTasking Mode. Simply touch an open app to resume working in that one, or swipe up to close it. You can even close two at a time by swiping up with two fingers!

If your iPad "freezes" up: Hold the Home button and On/Off button simultaneously for 10 - 15 seconds. The screen will go blank. This is referred to as a "Hard Reboot". (You may have to hit the On button to turn it back on)

When you switch from an old iPad to a new iPad, icloud holds your old back up for 3 days (making your iCloud storage seem full). After the 3 days, you can delete the old iPad's backup, freeing up the storage space.

Fun practice: Fill in contacts. You can add notes, birthdays, etc. in the Contacts and search them later via Search light. To use Search Light: About 2/3 down on screen (between icons) Swipe finger down. A Search Bar will appear at the top of the screen and the keyboard at the bottom to type in your search.

Another fun thing to practice - take a photo of the screen to capture a recipe on facebook, a website photo, etc:

for example - go to palmcreekupdate.blogspot.com. Scroll to a photo you want to capture. Press and release (NOT HOLD) the On/Off button & Home button at the same time (when you release, you will hear a camera click). Then go to photos to find your screenshot. Can email it to self or Evernote, post it on facebook, send it in a message, use it as wallpaper, print it, etc.

Nifty Tip:
When at a website you have reached via Safari, Before taking a screenshot photo: if four lines appear at the beginning of the address bar, you can tap those lines and all of all the garbage (photos, ads, etc) on that webpage will disappear. (Essentially giving you a printer-friendly model of just the text).

Remember to be PATIENT when searching the web. We now have a spinning circle instead of an hourglass telling us it is working.

Everyone needs to have at least one backup of your iPad and/or your iPhone to protect you from losing your Contacts and Photos especially. To see if and when your last Backup occurred:

Go to Settings/icloud/Storage & Backup

Under Backup, make sure iCloud Backup button is green. (Automatically backs up your iPad when it is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi).

Below the words Back Up Now shows when your iPad was Last Backed up.

For those who on don't have Wi-Fi at their site while here at Palm Creek, and need to backup their iPad:

Plan some time to go one of the many WiFi Hotspots in the Park. Bring your charger and make sure you are connected to Palm Creek's WiFi, plug your iPad in with the power cord. It should automatically back up to iCloud.

WOW we had over 40 attendees this past Sunday. 25 were new to the iPad Users Group. Many were starting with their New Year's resolutions of improving themselves with the iPad and others just got one for Christmas. In any event, welcome. Hopefully everyone who attends learns something. Unfortunately I do not have the resources to do individual group sessions based on ability as I am only one person. At least until Brent gets back, I will try to focus on assisting those newbies who want to get up and running. If those who have been in the group in the past can assist, that would be wonderful. Many hands make light work, and in my case we can progress faster.

To prevent the screen from rotating when you rotate the
iPad:

First, go to Settings/General/Use Side Switch To:

Put the checkmark at lock rotation (if you checkmark mute,
the side switch will be used to mute or unmute your iPad). You have to choose
your preference, as the side button can only be used for one or the other.

Then, on the exterior of the iPad, beside the Volume control on horizontal
top left, (or top right side when holding the iPad vertically) is a
Button.
Sliding that button to the right (or down) exposes an orange
dot, and will lock the screen. Sliding the button to the left (or top) will
allow the screen to rotate. (The button will mute or unmute if you chose that
option for the side button while in the Settings mode.)

To know if your iPad is updated:
Under Settings/General/Software
Update-it will either attempt to update, or show you the iOS version you
have. (7.04 is currently the newest version.)

To make a shortcut to the invaluable Palm Creek iPad Users'

Settings/Privacy/Location Services Location Services SHOULD be on
for iPad apps to work well

Hit Home button twice-goes to Multitasking mode. All
applications that are currently open appear. You can switch to another
application just by tapping on the one you want to use. If you wish to close
one, simply Swipe it up. Note: having many open not only uses up the battery
faster, but slows down the performance of the iPad.

Next, Sandy told us about the SnapGuide App. It's a cool, free app that explains how to do various things with step by step instructions accompanied by detailed photos. Topics range from A-T including Arts and Crafts, Automotive, Games & Tricks, Home, Music, Pets, Photography,Sports & Technology (to name a few).

Then Betty Davies shared how to use Pinterest. You can simply start by scrolling and clicking through the captioned photos that are there when you open the app.

Or you can use the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen to Search for pins of interest. You'll be able to find almost anything - animals, architecture, automobiles, crafts, cooking videos from you tube, Home Decor, Humor, Kids, the list is endless! (and that's why it can be so addictive). When you see an item that looks interesting, click on it to enlarge it. Now if you tap the Pin it square, you can pin it to one of your boards. If the item doesn't fit any of your board categories, you can create a new board by clicking the +in a box. Give your new board a title, description and category, then click Create.

If you simply like an item, but don't want to pin it, tap the heart symbol. When you go to your personal page (the person icon) and click on Like, it will be there.

The + icon will allow you to pin your own personal photos or something you've found on the web.

The person icon takes you to the boards you've created from items you've pinned, but will also let you create 6 Secret boards that no one can follow (in case you want to pin secret recipes, etc).

The House icon will take you back to the starting page (aka Home).

New topic: To see which apps are hogging space - Settings/General/Usage. Be patient and the Apps with how many GB or MB they're using will appear (in descending order). From there you can delete any app (>, then delete app) and get it back later, but if you have put data into it - you will lose that data and it won't come back when you redownload the app.

Bob Leger then explained how a thief could access the control center of your iPad and set it to Airplane mode thus disabling the Find My iPad feature. To prevent that, do this: Settings/Control Center/make sure the Access on lockscreen button is NOT green.

He also pointed out the HDR (High Dynamic Range) function for the Camera on iPads above an iPad2. If you turn it on and take 2-3 photos consecutively, it will compile the 3 better ones and come up with the best photo.

Bob also mentioned the free Shazam app. It recognizes music which can be really helpful if you just can't remember the name of that song that is playing on the radio.

Finally, Sandy reminded us that we can just type a question about using our iPad into Google and we'll get answers!

Bob Leger shared info on Textilus - a free Word Processor app that is compatible with Microsoft Office. You can create documents, insert photos, drawings and charts, and can send as an email.

Next, he quickly showed us how to manage multiple emails on the iPad in the Mail App: Once you have the Mail App open, tap "edit" on the upper right above your emails that are stacked along the left side of the screen. A clear circle appears beside each email. Tap the circles to select the emails you want, then tap the "Trash" button on the lower right (below the emails). "Trash Message" appears in red text within a bubble, giving you a second chance to confirm you want to delete the email(s). Tap that, and the selected emails swoosh into the trash can.

Then we broke up into groups based on user level experience. Our group of 3s & 4s chose to go around the tables and have each person share his or her favorite (or most frequently used) App. Surprisingly, almost every one of us shared something different and boy, did we learn a lot! Here is a list of the Apps shared:

Avery Design and Print (free app) - use to make your own Business Card.

Magic Jack (free app) - use to make free calls (even to Canada) but you must have access to the internet. Another caveat - when you use magic jack to place a call, the person receiving the call will see a Florida area code, so let them know ahead of time by text or email that you will be calling if they refuse to answer unrecognized phone calls. Also, you can't call MasterCard in Canada and/or some other toll free numbers. Probably because of the Florida area code.

Pinterest (free app) - use to look up and save thousands of ideas. User stated it was like having 100 magazines to browse through while her husband watches hockey. Caution, it may be addictive! :-)

BTW, Sandy showed us how to find and use emojicons (various little symbols) to personalize events on our Calendars so we can see at a glance what we have going on each day of the month. i.e.: Three things to attend in one day? To access the Emojicons during regular typing, tap the World button on the keyboard (just left of the space bar). To get back to the English keyboard, tap the world button again (now on the far left).

*Gas Buddy (free app) - use to find nearby gas stations by city, state, zip (or using current location) along with their gas prices. We will be limited in how many can attend.

Also we are forming a group for notifications etc under our private network Nextdoor, if you are interested in joining and are a resident of the Park, please contact me and I will send you an invite.
Send requests via the contact address in the upper right of this blog.

Also, if you have special requests, please let Brent and I know. And most likely we will be operating and demonstrating apps using the new iOS7 system.
This was the last regular Sunday meeting for the group. I will continue to post updates to the apps
and tips, however not on a regular schedule.
Hopefully you will continue to follow the blog and send Brent and myself a note at palmcreekipad@gmail.com, from
time to time to share some of the discoveries you have made over the summer.

Sunday we did an overview of Evernote Food as a companion app to Evernote. We downloaded
Evernote Food. When it asks you to
create an account DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT use your Evernote
user ID and password. As a reminder, your user ID can be found by going to the
home page of Evernote. In the upper left
you will see your user name, to verify, look at your account info under general
settings and look at your Evernote email address, your ID is the first portion
up to the period or dot.

Before downloading you might want a quick overview of what
Evernote Food is and does. For those of
you who have been inputting recipes already, never fear, all will still be under
the Evernote umbrella, just presented to you in a different way.
<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">We installed Evernote Web
Clipper to individual iPads. The Web
Clipper is usually installed on the PC or Mac, but having it on the iPad is
just great. If you are technically
advanced, I will send you the instructions, it is a onetime install, but
involves several steps including cut and paste. Send a note to us via the Contact Information

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Showed how you can

woodworking, quilting, sewing etc etc.

Viola - 3D Maps
This Sunday Brent Shirley focused on Photos and Camera. The default iPad Camera app was compared to the
Camera+ apps ($.99) which allows you a zoom option, stabilizing feature, 30
second timer, a burst option for a faster shutter speed, and exposure are among
some of the neat features of this app.
It also has a menu where you can change many of the settings and auto
save to lightbox (a buffered holding area for pics ) until you really want to save
them.

Also went
over Panorama+ apps ($.99) again. A Panorama option comes with the iPhone 4S, but to get the same option
on the iPad you need to purchase or download an app that does that for you.
Another
neat photo app Brent went over was Text
on Photo app ($.99) but was free today on the Apps Gone Free site that is recommended by the Users Group and
needs to be checked on a daily basis for some great opportunities. Also a fun
app that Brent showed was adding cute features to current photos, this free app
is called Photo Editor by Aviary,
however you only get a limited amount of free stickers the rest you can
purchase different categories for $.99 ea (not such a great bargain).

mentioned an app that allows you to take still photos extracted from video to
capture those special moments to get a great picture when everyone or
everything is moving. This app Video 2 Photo is now $1.99 but was
available for FREE on March 21 via Apps Gone Free.

Next he
went over some of the neat stuff you can do with default Maps app that comes with the iPad. by turning on the 3D mapping function that comes with Maps (after opening, go to lower left corner and
select 3D, also flip the page by going to the lower right hand corner where the
page is dog-eared and select and chose Hybrid).
Select a city and zoom in to all the 3D effects of the large cities with
tall buildings.

Also Sandy
mentioned was an alternative to buying a handheld GPS unit versus installing
one of the apps like Magellan Roadmate Tom Tom, or Garmin. USA or North American versions. Links to these apps can be found under LINKS TO USER APPS – Mapping Suggestions

Brent also did
a review of some Safari settings,
how to set auto fill so you don’t have to fill in all the information on a
request, but you must add your own contact information into your contact
list. Also if you want to check out what
other tabs you have open on other devices, you need to turn on the iCloud
function in Safari. This is done by
going into Settings, iCloud, and
turning Safari to the on position. When
you go back to Safari, a cloud will appear in the title bar. If you select it, it will show you other tabs
you have open in Safari on your other devices.

This Sunday Sandy Morin did another presentation on Evernote. We reviewed the Evernote from last week by replaying the Video/Audio lesson on why you should set up Notebooks and a bit of a strategy on the subjects contained within a Notebook by Dr. Brad Semp the founder of Busyness.com and creator and host of the Busyness TV show.

Next we viewed the Video/Audio lesson by Dr. Semp on Developing a Tagging Strategy in Evernote.

We then reviewed some of the things we looked at last week. We created a note, went over some of the ways to capture information and place into Evernote. These are just a few:

Create a Note, Scan a Document, adding a Picture, Email Content, Record an Audio Note, Cut and Paste. These are only a few. We will be doing Web Clipping and how to Print from Evernote in upcoming weeks.

We revisited some of the settings so you can see how much of the 60 MB monthly allotment you have used and when it gets renewed (days) within Evernote. Also a review of how to use your Evernote Upload email address so that you can send emails to your Evernote account and then put them into Notebooks.

Next week Brent will return and hopefully we can go into some fun stuff with pictures or other things Brent may want to tell us about. Also, as I did this past week, I can stay a bit and help those with Evernote or other issues after class.

If you have not signed up . Please do so as there will be a wait list as soon as the room fills up. This Sunday Sandy Morin did a presentation on Evernote. We went through introduction to Evernote videos and got an overall perspective on how to use Evernote in our daily and business lives. Go to the side bar on the right and click on Evernote Training Video under the HELP VIDEOS section for a review.

Glen Munro of Brain Diesel usually does videos on Microsoft stuff, but he was so impressed with Evernote, he decided to share with us some of the powerful ways that Evernote can help us in our busy lives.

Sandy later walked us thru the steps of creating an account, creating a note, how to add an image from your Camera Roll or one you just took. We reviewed some of the settings within Evernote and also were shown how to use your Evernote Upload email address so that you can send emails to your Evernote account and then put them into Notebooks.

We also heard a Video/Audio lesson on why you should set up Notebooks and a bit of a strategy on the subjects contained within a Notebook by Dr. Brad Semp the founder of Busyness.com and creator and host of the Busyness TV show.

After watching and listening to the videos we had a work session on creating an ID and password, creating notes, creating notebooks, sending emails, and how to put some information that can be retrieved at any time from any device you have placed the Evernote application on.

Hopefully everyone is checking daily the Apps Gone Free link that is located on the right under LINKS. These apps are not free forever; some of them are only a free for a limited time or just one day! So be sure to check it once a day, maybe when you check your mail, get in the habit, you can save a lot of money and gain new areas of interest.

This app keeps eye on your device usage (works on iPhone as well as iPad), battery usage and based on your charge, how many minutes you have available etc. Try it, it can tell you a lot about your iPhone or your iPad.

iPad Users Group met in the Cholla Room.

We had as large group for the size of the room and most
could not get wifi access from the Ocotillo room across the street. We still had lots to discuss.
Some of the topics were Digital Magazines. A demonstration was shown of Better Homes
and Gardens, paper vs digital versions and how they can come to life with videos
and extra information that will pop up when selecting an info icon on the
digital version of the magazine. Some of
the choices of magazines are pointed out on this Web Blog. Check out the side panels for additional
information. In addition to Newstand there are also versions of popular magazines available from www.Zinio.com

If anyone is familiar with Shazam, an app with the ability
to identify songs and artists, and QR Reader for scanning a program that reads
the QR Scan Codes, there is a new app on the block that does both, Digimarc
which not only does the QR scans and music scans but it also lets you detect
imperceptible digital watermarks on magazine pages. An example will be shown in class next Sunday
of the ones included in Cooking Light magazine.

Make a shortcut to this site. Open in Sarfari and hit the arrow button on
the upper left and the hit the Add to Home Screen to make a shortcut. http://www.pcipadusersgroup.blogspot.com/

Security issues were discussed and email questions were
answered on deleting versus archiving.

Next week we will return to the Ocotillo Room and there will
be a presentation on eBooks from the Library.
Hopefully we can have some breakout groups on various subjects. Also
some tips on Evernote Web Clipper and activating your Evernote Upload address
so that emails, and scanned documents can be stores in Evernote. If you have a chance, make sure you download
Evernote so that you can participate in the discussion. Links are are this website on the sidebar.

Brent showing the Group how to ..........

Brent discussed various new applications and reviewed some
old ones.

Group discussion on external keyboards, ZAGG keyboards which
are attached to a case, vs standalone wireless Bluetooth ones. Also made announcement that Apple is getting
ready to debut a new iPad in March/April 2013.

Went over some of the apps that you can get for free for TV
channels and programs you may have missed, like History Channel, or PBS
stations.

Demonstrated Panorama ($.99) app again and how to use
Instaquote to add descriptions or comments to your photos. Many questions came up on iCloud syncing of
photos and how they can be filtered, backed up by other means, etc. Photo management and manipulation will
probably be a Group Breakout Session next week.

Brent did a brief overview of Flipboard - Print-style page
layouts. Streaming audio and video support. Content partnerships with major
publishers. Strong social networking features. Fast page-swiping. Looks sharp
in both portrait and landscape modes. Aggregates news, images, video, social
networking updates, and shared links.

Skype was reviewed and the MagicJack app was also introduced
for just calling US and Canada (no video) as an alternative for low cost or no
cost phone calls. It was also mentioned
that Canadians can get US apps, however, they need to go to the Apple Store
(closest is Chandler) to set up a US Apple ID.
By doing this, this allows Canadians to access apps like Pandora and other
free apps that are available in the US but not in Canada/

Being the sizes of the classes are getting smaller, we are
going to start a new format so that more people can get involved and share
their experiences.

Next week, starting at 1pm, there will be a discussion of
Evernote and how to use the Evernote Webclipper and also how to send emails to
be saved to Evernote, for example online order receipts. Those interested in pursuing Evernote should
go the link section of this blog and click on Evernote. The links to download Evernote are there and
also a short introduction video to Evernote.

After a brief discussion, we will break up in small groups
to work on evaluating and searching out the better apps for a specific
application. Photos. Utilities and other
most-wanted topics. Groups will be
formed on interest of specific topics.
Brent and Sandy will assist with the groups with questions on research
techniques and other questions.

Hopefully, this format will create a more relaxed and
informal group for answering and researching the many topics that there seems
to be interest in.
